Vehicles affected

In order to improve air quality and public health, from 1 January 2020 onwards, traffic of the most polluting vehicles in the area inside Barcelona's ring roads will be restricted between 7 am and 8 pm on working days from Monday to Friday. This means that the most polluting vehicles will not be able to drive in the low emissions zone (ZBE; comprising Barcelona, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs and part of Esplugues de Llobregat and Cornellà de Llobregat).

General information

The vehicle categories affected by this restriction will be light vehicles including motorcycles and mopeds (L), cars (M1) without an environmental label:

  • Pre-Euro 3 standard petrol cars (M1) (usually with pre-2000 license plates) and pre-Euro 4 standard diesel cars (with pre-2005 or 2006 license plates).
  • Pre-Euro 2 motorcycles and mopeds (category L) (usually with pre-2003 license plates).
  • From the 1 April 2021, pre-Euro 3 standard petrol vans (category N1) (usually with pre-2000 license plates) and pre-Euro 4 standard diesel vans (with pre-2005 or 2006 license plates).
  • From the 1 January 2022, pre-Euro 4 standard lorries (category N2 and N3) and light buses (M2) (usually with pre-2006 or 2007 license plates).
  • From the 1 July 2022, pre-Euro 4 standard heavier buses and coaches (M3) (usually with pre-2006 or 2007 license plates).

Vehicles registered in the metropolitan area

Vehicles with a 0, ECO, C or B environmental label can travel within the ZBE Rondes de Barcelona without any restrictions. If you need to have the DGT environmental label, but you have lost it or you have not received it, please call 060 for information about how to obtain it.

Environmental labels can also be purchased or collected at Post offices.

If your vehicle does not meet the requirements, you have the following alternatives:

  • Daily permits

    Provide temporary access to the ZBE Rondes de Barcelona for a maximum of 24 days of authorised traffic per year.

    The T-verda (metropolitan green card) is a transport pass that provides free and unlimited use of integrated public transport services for all the citizens of the metropolitan area who decide to deregister a vehicle without an environmental label and send it for scrap.

    T-aire is a multi-person two-trip transportation card for integrated trips within zones 1-6. It is sold in ticket vending machines of metro, tram and train stations only when there are traffic restrictions due to high pollution levels.

Foreign-registered vehicles

As these vehicles are not classified according to the DGT environmental label, they must certify compliance with the same environmental and technological requirements to be able to access and circulate through the ZBE.

  • From the 1 January 2020:
    • Motorcycles and mopeds (L) with Euro 2 standard or higher
    • Cars (M1) classified as electric, petrol Euro 3 standard or higher, or diesel Euro 4 standard or higher. 
  • From the 1 April 2021, vans (category N1) classified as electric, petrol Euro 3 standard or higher, or diesel Euro 4 standard or higher.
  • From the 1 January 2022, lorries (category N2 and N3) and light buses (M2) classified as Euro 4 standard or higher.
  • From the 1 July 2022, buses and coaches (M3) for passenger transport classified as Euro 4 standard or higher.

If your vehicle meets the access conditions to enter the ZBE, but has not been registered in advance, a fine of €100 can be imposed.
